It’s the BIG day. You’re presenting the VISION and STRATEGIC PLAN. You’ve spent the past 6 months preparing for this day. You’ve read all the demographic and statistical information. The vision and action plan are clear. You’ve dotted all your “i’s” and crossed all your “t’s”. You’re pumped, primed and ready. Yet you have this nagging feeling that you’ll get cut off at the knees. Your gut is telling you that there is resistance to your proposal and it’s growing.

Want MORE stress in your life? These are my favorite tips guaranteed to make you stressed out and miserable.
- Strive for perfection in everything you do. Complete failure is a guaranteed result from even the smallest imperfection.
- Always compare yourself to others. Look for where you don’t measure up and remind yourself every day.
- Surround yourself with negative people. Aggressive people who constantly criticize you are a great way to focus on your failings.
- Aim to spend at least 20% more than your income. A must for the holiday season!
- Remember your failures. Keep a failures log. Frequently go over your many occasions of incompetence.
- Breathe in “I feel grumpy” - Breathe out “I feel tense” - Breathe in “I am stupid” - Breathe out "I am a failure"
- Win at all costs, especially when you are in the wrong. Remember there is never any justification for compromise. Bully and ridicule the other person in defeat.
- Make up a list of other people’s bad habits. Pin a weekly wall chart up to see who can add up the most irritating things about the other person!
- Avoid vacations. If you do go away, do your duty and visit relatives. Always make sure the office can reach you in a crisis. Take your computer, modem, cell and Blackberry and your Admin's home telephone number - in case you don’t hear from her.
- Always over promise and under deliver. Commit yourself to impossible time lines. Remember to do it all yourself of course!
- Suffer in silence. Gain the maximum stress from a problem by trying to deal with it entirely on your own and always keep your worries to yourself.
- Dismiss coaching as a waste of time. No one cares, understands, believes you are capable of change or wants you to be your best – right?

So much of our leadership reading is on the development of skills. In many ways that’s easier than reading on the development of our soul. In Practicing Greatness, Reggie McNeal strips away the veneer and writes about what it takes for leaders to choose greatness.
